A Voice From The Grave- The True Story Of OgoChukwu

                               OGOCHUKWU ONUCHUKWU (NEE ONUGU)
                                               [A voice from the grave]
  Picture
My mum is crying. I can see  her from here. She has aged since the last time I saw her.

Why does she look so old and why is she so thin? Can someone console her? Can someone make her stop  crying?

I try to get up but I can’t. I try to reach for her, but I’m stuck where  I am. It is very dark in here, and very cold, so very cold.

What am I doing here?
Where is everybody?   Where are my children?  I begin to panic, to struggle;  I want to get out of this dark room.

I can hear Uzo calling. She’s calling my name. Then, I see mum again. And I hear Uzo again. I don’t see my children. Where are my children? I can’t see beyond the walls of this dark and cold room.

Uzo calls again.

She sounds desperate to rouse me from my sleep. I am struggling  to wake but I can’t. I open my eyes and they shut of their own accord.
I am powerless to keep them from shutting. And I find as soon as I stop struggling,  my sleep becomes sweet repose. Suddenly I don’t want to wake from it just yet. It is peaceful.
I see mum again, and I see Uzo. Uzo keeps calling. She won’t stop calling. She is crying too, just like mum.

Can someone bring Kamsi and Amanda to me? Can someone bring my babies to me? I need to hug them, Kamsi, especially. Is he crying too and calling out for me?
Does he understand that I  am gone? Kamsi will miss me.

He is a special child, you know; Kamsiyochukwu - my son and my first child.

I prayed and longed for his birth. He was the blessing  from above that would seal Kevin’s love for me and give me some footing in his  home and some acceptance from his family.

Before Kamsi, I was a nobody in Kevin’s home.
I was born the last of nine children, the baby of the family. I was used to love and affection. I was  everyone’s baby. I grew up knowing that everyone had my back, I grew up knowing  the safety and security of being the baby of the home. You may then understand  my shock when I stepped out of my home and into new territory with the man of my  dreams only to find that I was really not as special as I had been made to  believe. I look back to that day when Kevin took me home to introduce me to my new family. The cold and rude shock of the welcome his brother’s wife gave me  set off an alarm in my head.

These people didn’t think I was special. In fact,  her first words were, ”Kevin, ebe   kwa ka isi dute nka?” (Kevin, “Where on earth did you bring this one from?) That would be the first time I would be addressed as “this one” and from  then on, I grappled with the realization that I was not welcome in my new home.

Sports Minister blames House of Assembly, for sports crisis.
The Supervising Minister of Sports/ Bolaji Abdulahi, at the Senate Public Hearing on Sports yesterday said the National Assembly is responsible for the crisis that has engulfed the sports sector.
Speaking at the Senate Public Hearing ,the Minister blamed the National Assembly for not putting in adequate measures to unite the sports family, but rather the House intensifies the rift ‘by knocking the heads of the agencies against the National Sports Commission.“The National Assembly has continued to promote the crisis in the sports sector by giving the agencies under the NSC the feeling that they are independent and disregarding the supervisory roles of the commission,” said Abdulahi.
He revealed that his tenure as Minister of Sports has opened his eyes to the reality that the NSC has been almost relegated to a mere government agency that has no respect and recognition from such government agencies as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the National Institute for Sports (NIS), which are supposed to be operating under the commission.
The minister also noted that instead of making the NFF and NIS budgets to pass through the NSC as the supervising organ, the National Assembly ignores the commission’s supervisory role over the agencies and invites them independently to defend their budgets.

Gunmen attack American Embassy in Abuja

The United States of America Embassy in Nigeria’s capital Abuja, came under attack yesterday by unknown gunmen.
Details of the attack were sketchy, but it was learnt that the gunmen were over-powered by superior fire of a combined team of  security men on guard at the embassy located along the Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District.
According to reports, several shots were heard within the vicinity of the embassy in the afternoon, when the Ambassador was having a meeting with staff of the embassy. The internal security had to set off the alarm and got everyone to take cover.
It was gathered that as the shooting was going on everyone within the embassy ran for dear life before the situation was brought under control.  Two suspected assailants were apprehended and taken into custody at the end of the incident.
The embassy has been under heavy security watch since the attack on the United Nations Building in Abuja, last year.  It has been heavily barricaded, while fierce-looking security men keep watch around its vicinity.
A terse statement by the US authorities confirming the incident said, “we believe there were shots fired in the vicinity of the U.S. Embassy. The Nigerian authorities have two individuals in custody. We refer you to the Nigerian police for further information.”
Strangely however, the police authorities in Abuja denied knowledge of the shooting and the arrest of the two individuals at the scene of the incident.
When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations officer, Superintendent of Police Jimoh Moshood, told Vanguard that some senior police officers had been dispatched to the embassy to ascertain what really happened. An Anti-Terrorist Squad and Bomb disposal units were also said to have been deployed to carry out investigations about the alleged shooting incident but they said nothing of such happened.

Manchester City v Chelsea: Carlos Tevez comes out of the cold to help restore order for City

Manchester City v Chelsea: Carlos Tevez comes out of the cold to help restore order for City

Sir Alex Ferguson versus Roberto Mancini is a contest of experience versus youth. City's Italian coach has been here before, in Italy, but has not sampled the unique pressure of duking it out with English football’s greatest club manager in spring’s brighter light.
In the other dugout here, Roberto Di Matteo managed to leave out Didier Drogba and upset Fernando Torres at the same time by taking him off midway through the second half. This is the win-double for Chelseamanagers hoping to lose their jobs. Mancini, too, has grappled with the sort of political issues Ferguson is immune from by virtue of his huge power base – but with this vital 2-1 victory City’s leader can say he is making the right calls.
Starting with Mario Balotelli is the default gamble of Mancini’s time in the sky-blue half of Manchester. Red cards or extreme detachment can follow. This time Balotelli brought ineffectiveness and Mancini took him off at half-time.
“He was not good,” the manager said. But the point was that he put it right quickly, and can now face the last nine games with a clear hierarchy among his forwards. An all-Argentine strike force of Sergio Agüero and Carlos Tévez looks

Civil Defence Parades 87 Fake NYSC Members

NYSC-members-0110.jpg - NYSC-members-0110.jpg

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Wednesday, paraded about 87 suspected fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
While parading the suspects before journalists in Abuja, on behalf of the Commandant General, Dr. Ade Abolurin, the Corps’ public Relations Officer and a Chief Superintendent, Mr. Emmanuel Okeh, said the suspects were arrested in a hotel in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, where they were camped awaiting possible deployment to their places of primary assignment.
Abolurin disclosed that NSC-DC had in 2010, made similar arrest of about 54 suspected Corps members in the same Nasarawa State, adding that it was still making a serious effort to burst the syndicate that was behind the nefarious practice.
He said: “In 2010, based on intelligence report, 54 fake Corps members were arrested by members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps from an illegal camp. Today again, we are bringing before you another 87 fake Corps members that have been also arrested. It will interest you to know that the intelligence networking of the Corps personnel had led to the discovery of this illegal hideout by these fake Corps members.
“The 87 acclaimed Corps members were arrested from Tip Top guest house in Nasarawa Local Government Area in Nasarawa state where they were camped by an acclaimed agent of the NYSC who is still at large and these 87 acclaimed fake Corps members have been undergoing illegal training,” he said.
“Unfortunately for them our intelligence staff, who also discovered, claimed to be one of those to train them but unfortunately they never knew that she was understudying the environment. They were waiting for their passing out like the regular Corps members who were on the camp in Keffi. Unfortunately, while they were celebrating and awaiting their deployment letters, they were clamped down by our personnel and 87 of them were arrested and brought to the headquarters.
“With them, are the call up letters from NYSC, all the NYSC kits that were given to the regular Corps members and you can see, most of them are already in their uniform waiting for deployment to various places of their primary assignment, which unfortunately could not take place because their activities were cut short by our personnel,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Corps’ Deputy Commandant in Nasarawa state, Mr. Walter Akubuiroh, who led the operation said surveillance was carried in virtually all parts of the state and in most cases of abnormalities, threat to security, arrests have been made and handed over to appropriate quarters.
“What we are seeing today is an unfortunate development. Most of the victims are students of distance learning centres of the universities concerned and they were tricked into believing that they could be given opportunity to serve like normal graduates from our universities. They succumbed to that trick, they took them around the state when call-up letters were issued to normal Corps members they convinced they invited them with the impression that they had a way of making it work out for them,” Akubuiroh noted.
Our investigation shows that initially they took them around the state somewhere in Nyanya, where they camped them for about four days after which they relocated them to a place, a hotel in Nasarawa, Toto.  It’s in that hotel, Tip Top hotel that’s where they’ve been since eighth of this month. They took them to the bush, faking training, convincing them that they were going to take them to Kubwa, where the normal NYSC camp is,” he added.
He disclosed that the suspects were from different universities and fell victim to different persons who claimed to be agents of the NYSC.
Disclosing that the suspects paid between N60,000, to N150, 000 depending on the school where they came from.

“There is One Mr. Chinedu who was earlier arrested for involving in illegal recruitment of people into different services collecting money from them establishing of website and internet for job recruitment and today, he’s among those apprehended here as a fake Corps member, which means he has done it for so many persons and today he is involved himself,” he revealed.

Chasing Shadows While Corruption Walks Naked

It’s unsettling how we came to this level of corruption in a country whose citizens are very godly. Every street you turn, one is likely to be greeted by a cathedral or a minaret, signifying our links with two most powerful religions in Nigeria.
Even those who claim that they were not created by God Almighty, piously assemble at their sanctums or shrines to worship to whatever they believe in.
Whether in the cathedral, mosque or sanctum, one thing runs as a creed-do what is right and acceptable to God-as none of the religions teaches anyone to steal, loot or impoverish the people or the nation.

Army Captain Arrested For Harassing Atiku

An Army Captain suspected to have deserted the Army two months ago, was arrested after he attempted to break into the Kaduna home of former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar.
The incident is coming barely one week after another man who alleged that the former VP owed him some money, climbed a telecoms mast and threatened to commit suicide if he did not get back his money.

Sixteen killed in tribal clashes in Northern Nigeria

Sixteen people have been killed in tribal clashes in the East Nigerian state of Taraba near the border with Cameroon. All the victims belong to the Tiv ethnic group of farmers native to the area, attacked by nomad sheep-breeding Fulani from the mainly Muslim north of the country.
Politicians, traditional and religious leaders immediately requested government intervention to put an end to the escalation of violence between these two communities. According to a very recent report published by the Nigerian social-cultural association 'Miyetti Allah Katual Hore', in Nigeria over one thousand farmers have died in the past ten months in clashes with breeders. The age-old conflict between peasant farmers and breeders originates in the search for and control over grazing land vital for breeding. These violent clashes are almost aways the result of 'economic' conflicts and mistakenly perceived as religious clashes. The reports explains that in Nigeria sheep farming is monopolized by the Fulani, the fourth largest ethnic group in the country and also present in other Sahel nations. The Fulani, usually divided into nomad tribes, generally live in the north where there is a Muslim majority. Farmers, especially in the central and northern regions where the most serious clashes have taken place, almost aways belong to Christian-Animist ethnic minorities such as the Berom and the Tarok in the state of Plateau, or the Tiv (in Benue and Taraba). . .

Will ASHA sue Nokia as they lunch Nokia Asha in India.

Nokia has launched its third Asha S40 phone in India (after the 200 and 300 models) – the Asha 303.
While it’s not part of the new Asha bunchthat was unveiled at MWC 2012 last month, the Asha 303 is certainly an interesting handset. It offers a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as a 2.6 inch QVGA touchscreen display. Other features include a 1GHz single-core processor, HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Nokia Music Unlimited, 3.5mm headset jack, Bluetooth 2.1, 3.2MP rear camera, 170MB of internal memory, and MicroSD card support (up to 32GB).
Indian customers can buy the Nokia Asha 303 either from Vodafone (which is offering 1GB of free data for the first four months with the handset), or unlocked, from LetsBuy – which asks 7,764 INR (about $154) for the device, saying it will ship it starting next week.

Will MTN Crash Internet Cost With WACS Cable?

As MTN Nigeria prepares to go-live on the West African Cable System (WACS), a 14,000 kilometres fibre optic submarine cable with a capacity of 5.12 terabits per second (tbps), which berthed in the country last year, the expectation that Nigeria e-commerce and emergence as a digital economy may have to wait until the issue of carrying bandwidth traffic to the hinterlands is addressed.
The WACS consortium include MTN, Angola Cables, Broadband Infraco, Cable and Wireless Worldwide; Congo Telecom.; Société Congolaise des Postes et Télécommunications (“SCPT”), PT Communicacoes, Togo Telecom, Tata Communications, Telecom Namibia, Telkom SA Ltd, and Vodacom Group Ltd. WACS which cost about $650 million spans the entire West African coast and terminating in the United Kingdom.
The cable would enable seamless connectivity among Southern and West Africa countries with the rest of Europe and America. It has 15 established terminal stations along its route and would function to reduce the cost to connect the West coast of Africa into the high-speed global telecommunications network. MTN is the single biggest investor in WACS with over $90 million in the cable.

Champions League draw analysis

Lionel Messi/Didier Drogba/Cristiano Ronaldo
The Champions League quarterfinal draw put Barcelona and Real Madrid on opposite sides, while Chelsea will face Benfica in the quarters.
Many football fans were hoping for Barcelona and Real Madrid to meet in either the Champions League quarterfinals or semifinals -- two games instead of one. But placed on opposite sides in Friday's draw, it didn't happen. However, the Spanish giants are favored to meet in the May 19 final in Munich, so for those fans suffering from Clasico fatigue, a one-off title match is even more appealing.
Barcelona, on reputation, has an interesting quarterfinal against Serie A leader Milan, with Real paired with the team everyone wanted … APOEL.
Who's favored to win it all? We rank the eight teams still in contention.
